What lurks within Chaythe Asylum?
College professor Stephen Barlow needs cash. Badly. When a student asks him to head a new campus organization that centers around paranormal research, he puts his skepticism aside and signs on in the hopes of scoring a fat bonus.

Enter Chaythe Asylum?a long-shuttered and controversial institution where patients were allegedly subjected to unethical experiments. Closed in 1989 after a series of grisly murders, Stephen deems the old building as good a place as any to explore the possibility of the supernatural and arranges to take a tour with his students.

But it turns out that the asylum is not as abandoned as it seems. There is something sinister in the building. It has watched and waited for nearly three decades, and when Stephen and his students enter, they find themselves at the center of a nightmare 28 years in the making.

I picked this up on a sale on audible a short time ago, and seeing as it is so short, I also thought I would listen to it over the Halloween/Samhain days!
A good horror for the scary days of the year.

This is also the first time I've listen to anything by the narrator, as well as ''read'' anything by the author. That said, this also proves the biggest dilemma I have with this book.
While it was interesting enough, and I'm interested in listening to the rest of the series, I didn't really find it scary.
Sure, it had a creep factor that made me a little jumpy in the middle of the night, when I was alone and was wearing earplugs with noise cancellation, and all I heard was my own breathing, but it didn't keep me up at night or anything like that.
My dilemma is this, is that because the writer didn't write it scary? At times I thought the writer actually wrote a little too much, trying to hard.
Or was it the narrator, not narrating in a creepy way? At more than one time I found his voice kinda flat and weird when it shouldn't be. Like he wasn't sure how to tell one part of the tale.

Those things aside, though, I am interested in listening to more from this duo, as the story was intriguing enough.
I also found the characters OK. Even if they were a little weak at times, they were varied and interesting enough.
So not anything amazing, but OK and interesting enough, I guess.
